Colette Kolenda
Mixed-Methods researcher driving strategic product & business decisions at Spotify.
My Research Journey
I graduated from Duke with a Bachelors of Science in Neuroscience and a Certificate in Markets & Management Studies. My schoolwork instilled in me a deep love for understanding human behavior and rigorous research and experimental design.
My first formal role as a researcher was as a Research Assistant for the Brannon Lab at Duke’s Brain Institute for Brain Science. In this lab, I ran behavioral and EEG studies on infants and toddlers to assess cognitive processes involved in numerical processing. I was fascinated by how we could study how people think about math from both a behavioral and a neuroscience perspective.
Searching for a research role that generates more immediate impact, I started to do Behavioral Science research under Dan Ariely in his Center for Advanced Hindsight lab. I fell in love with the trifecta of research — brainstorming novel research questions, conducting and analyzing qualitative and qualitative research, and generating meaningful insights — to understand how people make decisions. I learned how to ask the questions others weren’t asking. This experienced shaped how I design clever studies to get to the truth of human behavior.
Currently a Senior User Researcher Spotify, I specialize in creative, mixed methods research. I lead research projects that involve either multiple User Research methods or collaborating with User Research, Data Science, Behavioral Science and Data Visualization. My holistic research enables data-driven strategic decision making for leadership from business and product teams on Spotify Free.
